Puk prep is critically important for consistently good espresso. If your puck prep is ineffective, not even the best espresso machine in the world will deliver results. What you trying to avoid is uneven extraction, which can be caused by uneven distribution and channelling. Channelling is when water finds a weak spot in the puck, attracting more water to pass through that channel than the rest of the coffee bed. The result is a mix of desirable and undesirable flavours rather than a harmonious delicious espresso. For the ideal puck, you need:

  1. Consistent grinds from a good quality espresso grinder.
  2. Even distribution of coffee in the portafilter. This is where the WDT tool comes in, and,
